Contemporary painting and sculpture by mid-career Australian artist Dr Mark Elliot-Ranken.
“Suppose you came as an explorer into an unknown country with a language quite strange to you. In what circumstances would you say that the people there gave orders, understood them, rebelled against them and so on. The common behaviour of mankind is the system of reference by means of which we interpret an unknown language.” Ludwig Wittgenstein Philosophical Investigations
Wittgenstein's words inspired Mark Elliot-Ranken's latest series of abstracts, varied in scale, subject matter and in the unique approach of Mark's distinctive visual 'language'.
According to Mark “To do as Wittgenstein asks us to do, that is create or at least try and interpret that ‘unknown language’ especially in regard to the terrain of our inner world is to pick up the threads of our own self…that which makes ‘our-self’. Such a language is a tool for exploration rather than simply communication.”
Mark Elliot-Ranken's Threads opens Thursday June 6th from 6-8pm and runs through Saturday June 22nd at Disorder Gallery corner Stanley and Bourke Street Darlinghurst.
